Details
In The Mauritanian, directed by Kevin Macdonald, an extraordinary true story unfolds as Mohamedou Ould Salahi fights for his freedom after being unjustly detained and imprisoned without charge by the U.S. Government for several years. This gripping legal drama is based on Salahi's memoir, Guantanamo Diary.
Set in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, the film recounts Salahi's harrowing journey as he faces torture, interrogation, and isolation at Guantanamo Bay. Determined to prove his innocence, Salahi forms an unlikely alliance with defense attorney Nancy Hollander, who is determined to uncover the truth and challenge the system that allows indefinite detention without trial.
As Hollander and her associate Teri Duncan dig deeper into Salahi's case, they uncover shocking evidence of government misconduct and manipulation. Salahi's resilience and unwavering spirit captivate not only his legal team but also Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Couch, the military prosecutor assigned to the case, who finds himself wrestling with his own beliefs and the demands of justice.
The Mauritanian is a thought-provoking and intense exploration of justice, human rights, and the power of the truth. Superbly acted by a talented ensemble cast including Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, and Benedict Cumberbatch, this gripping film sheds light on a dark chapter in recent history and raises important questions about the limits of governmental power and the fight for justice in a post-9/11 world.
