After attending a concert by Russian cellist Irina Konsalevska Wallander saves her life when she is the victim of a car bomb. She recovers in hospital where another attempt is made to kill her. Wallander finds out she is to give evidence against hit-man Yuri Rina,who shot dead her boyfriend Mischa and that the Russian Mafia are out to silence her. Mischa smuggled drugs in her cello case unbeknown to her but forensics reveal an unexpected link between victim and killer,giving the reason for the murder as personal. Irina is moved to a houseboat where she proves her worth in a gun battle between the police and her pursuers.

Following an argument with her lover on her boat, a woman is found dead. Wallander and the Ystad police investigate; their inquiries lead them to a farm commune and to an old friend of Linda's.

Crusty old Greger Stehn and his equally unpopular dogs are poisoned with botulinum. Despite drawing out 20 million krone from the bank Greger lived in a hovel opposite a block of luxury ...

Linda discovers nine corpses and a live baby girl locked in an abandoned container lorry. Her father assumes the driver fled when he realized his cargo of illegal immigrants had died. A photo leads to a convent, whose abbess - an evacuee herself as a child - has helped many refugees and believes the ends justify the means to give them better lives. Holmblad, who owned and drove the lorry, is found, tortured and murdered, and his house ransacked.

War photographer Robert Thuresson's work is being put on display in Ystad. American Sarah Lyell argues with the photographer before the exhibition and later is found dead, in possession of one of his photos. The case extends beyond Sweden as Wallander finds a motive for the death.

Kurt and his men tries to find the connection between a horrible murder taken place in Ystad and the kidnapping of one in the police force daughter. It also seems someone has infiltrated the police and control every move the police make.

A horse breeder is found dead, and almost everything proves that he is been kicked by his horse. But the post-mortem shows the opposite, the horse breeder had been hit to death and that is a case for Kurt Wallander. The neighbors confirms that he lived alone, but he had visits from a mysterious woman several times. An amazing thing on the farm shows a hole new side of the horse feeder and somewhere, in the beautiful state of Skåne, there's a dark world that didn't want to see the daylight.

Priest Henrik Nordstrom is shot outside a hostel which he has been using to have sex with his lover Lotta, wife of Peter Unell. Unell is managing director of a firm Prominent Care,which exports hospital apparatus to Africa and the priest was involved with it. Henrik's pious wife Asa was aware of her husband's affair. Lotta tells Wallander she was about to leave her insensitive husband for the priest and candid photos of her with Nordstrom are found,along with the murder weapon in Peter Unell's house. As he stands trial for murder Wallander is convinced he has been framed and sets out to prove it.

Wallander interviews a couple about their stolen dog. The following day the couple are tortured and brutally murdered. Similar deaths follow and Wallander and his team have to find out whether there is an underlying connection in the deaths and whether three missing army conscripts are involved.

When Manfred Stjarne is stabbed to death outside the Brada cider factory his wife Claire has inherited - suspicion falls on Polish worker Jan Kowalski, with whose wife Manfred was having an affair, but Jan is found hanged - later evidence suggesting foul play. Benjamin Wilkes, an ex-psychologist who helped Manfred select redundancy candidates, is killed in the same way as Manfred, putting disgruntled ex-Brada employees in the frame, but a third slaying implicates a former patient of Wilkes, who has connections to the Stjarne family. A newly loved-up Isabelle and Pontius start to fool around whilst on surveillance, taking their eye off the ball and allowing this suspect to confront Claire.

Wallander forgets his gun in a bar and is suspended. With time on his hands, he looks into the disappearance of his daughter's father-in-law who may have been involved in the death of a young sailor during an international incident back in the '80's with a submarine entering Swedish waters.

Drug-running biker Erik Strah is found on a beach, his neck broken and the drugs gone - to the fury of vicious drugs baron Jovan Brankovic who runs the racket under cover of the Bloodhounds, the Ystad motor cyclists' group. Another member,Hans Kolt, gets a visit from officers Svartman and Isabelle about suspected dog fights. Svartman is attacked by a dog and Isabelle is later confronted in her flat by a masked man warning her from giving evidence. She wants to quit the force but Public Prosecutor Katarina gets Wallander to persuade her to stay. Looking for his senile old mother,who has gone walkabout from her care home, pathologist Nyberg accidentally stumbles on a disused church where the drugs gang meets. When another young biker, Johannes, is intimidated into taking over from Erik,Wallander and his team are in a position to follow him, raid the church and catch the villains.
