1930 and times are bad. When Ulla and Gunnar also get notice the future doesn't look bright. Besides that Ulla discover that she's pregnant. Gunnar gets a job thought so now they can get married. But the outbreak of the war 1939 puts both of their patience severely to the test. Gunnar gets called up for military service and the future is uncertain.

Gunnar Carlman has heard about the beautiful girls in Småland and takes the train to Vimmerby to meet them himself. He gets a job as a farm-hand at the mean-spirited farmer Jönsson's farm. It doesn't take long before he has had enough of Jönsson's anger and gets a new job at another farm, Svalnäs. It is owned by the young and handsome Christina Larsson. But she is far from a sweet and innocent woman.

Granhyttan in Sweden used to have rich mines. One day a suspicious couple, Signe and Orvar, arrives in the small town and retires in a purged hut. Nobody knows what they up to; but strange things starts to happen when a young boy, Staffan, finds a piece of shining metal, while playing in a mine.
