Set in 1945 Leningrad, Beanpole is a powerful and emotional drama that takes place in the aftermath of World War II. The city lies in ruins, with its buildings destroyed and its citizens devastated both physically and mentally. The film follows the lives of two young women, Iya and Masha, as they navigate this bleak landscape and search for meaning and hope in their shattered lives.
Iya, known as Beanpole due to her tall and slender frame, works as a nurse at a hospital for war veterans. Struggling with her own trauma, she finds solace in caring for the patients, particularly the children. Masha, on the other hand, returns from the frontlines of the war and seeks to rebuild her life with her lover, whom she plans to marry. However, unforeseen circumstances threaten to derail their plans.
As the women's paths intertwine, their friendship becomes a crucial lifeline in the midst of despair. They lean on each other for support and try to find a glimmer of hope amidst the ruins of their once vibrant city. Beanpole explores themes of war, trauma, resilience, and the human capacity for survival.
With its stunning cinematography, gripping performances, and poignant storytelling, Beanpole offers a compelling and intimate portrayal of the devastation and resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable hardship.
