J's mother overdoses on heroin, leading him to seek refuge with his estranged relatives, known for their criminal activities.
J's grandmother, Smurf, heads the family, and her four sons - Pope, Craig, Darren, and the tenacious Baz - are deeply entangled in Melbourne's underground crime scene. Although wary of his family's illicit doings, J is drawn further into their world as he witnesses their violent behavior and manipulative tactics. On the other hand, Detective Nathan Leckie, determined to bring down the Cody family, takes an interest in J's situation and persuades him to act as an informant.
