In Ball of Fire (1941), sexy nightclub singer Sugarpuss O'Shea finds herself in a dangerous situation. Her mobster boyfriend, Joe Lilac, is suspected of murder, and Sugarpuss' testimony could potentially send him to prison. To keep her safe, Sugarpuss goes into hiding and unexpectedly crosses paths with the naive Professor Bertram Potts.
Potts, a professor researching slang for an article, is instantly captivated by the sassy and quick-witted Sugarpuss. As their worlds collide, comedic and romantic chaos ensues. While hiding out with Potts and his fellow professors, Sugarpuss teaches them the art of the cha-cha, and Potts, in turn, learns the meaning of yum-yum.
