Directed by Jan Troell, the film offers a gripping portrayal of Segerstedt's courageous efforts to defend democratic values and sound the alarm bells amid a rising tide of extremism.
Set against the backdrop of pre-World War II Europe, the story follows Segerstedt as he uses his platform as chief editor of a leading Swedish newspaper to oppose Hitler's Nazi regime and criticize the Swedish government's policy of neutrality. Faced with immense pressure and threats from the authorities, Segerstedt remains steadfast in his commitment to truth and justice, even as his personal life begins to crumble. The film delicately explores the complex dynamics between his relationships with his wife, mistress, and children as his relentless pursuit of the truth takes a toll on those around him.
