Details
Howards End (2017) is a captivating drama set in early 20th century England, exploring the social and class divisions of the time. The story follows three families: the wealthy Wilcoxes, the intellectual and idealistic Schlegels, and the lower middle-class Basts. Through their intersecting lives, the film delves into timeless themes such as love, societal norms, and personal ambitions.
The Wilcox family, led by the pragmatic and successful businessman Henry, represents the upper echelons of society. Margaret Schlegel, a strong-willed and independent woman, befriends Henry's wife, Ruth Wilcox, whose unexpected death sets off a chain of events that challenge the status quo and reveal hidden truths.
As the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes become increasingly intertwined, tensions arise, highlighting the differences in their values and perspectives. Meanwhile, Leonard Bast, a struggling young man, finds himself caught in the middle, striving for a better life while facing numerous obstacles.
Howards End masterfully tackles themes of social inequality, gender roles, and the struggle for self-discovery. The film beautifully captures the essence of Edwardian England, with stunning cinematography and a talented ensemble cast that includes Hayley Atwell, Matthew Macfayden, and Tracy Ullman.
With its engaging narrative and thought-provoking exploration of societal divisions, Howards End is a must-watch for fans of period dramas and those interested in the complexities of human relationships.
